Recently
retired musician was best known for his work as a bassist with
Albert Collins, though the
longtime North and Southside bluesman was no slouch as a bandleader or a
bassist (nominated for a 1996 Handy award), either. His Earwig disk Aron
Burton Live (recorded at Buddy Guy's
Legends) includes guitarist Michael Dotson, keyboardist Allen Batts,
drummer Kenny Smith, and harpist "Mad Dog" Lester Davenport, as well as
guest vocalist Liz Mandville Greeson (a regular guest at his Blue
Chicago gigs). It's full of straight-on gritty Chicago-style blues, with
a tiny dash of west-side soul. He and brother Larry Burton played a
sidestage at the 1997 Chicago Blues Festival. You can also hear him backing up Carey Bell on the 1977 Delmark release Heartaches and Pain and Big Jack Johnson on Live In Chicago, recorded at Buddy Guy's Legends and the late Hothouse. |
